Kids’ Dental Care

What Pediatric Dentistry Covers

Pediatric dentistry is dental care for children, from the first milk tooth to the last permanent tooth in the teenage years. Children are not small adults. Their enamel is thinner, their jaws are still growing, and a first visit can feel frightening.

Milk teeth matter more than most parents expect. They help a child chew and speak clearly, and they hold the space for the permanent teeth underneath. A decayed milk tooth can hurt, become infected and affect the tooth that follows it.

Most of our work with children in Gurugram (Gurgaon) is therefore prevention: regular check-ups, cleaning, fluoride and advice you can use at home.

  • Finds decay early, while it is small and simple to treat
  • Protects milk teeth until they are ready to fall out by themselves
  • Follows jaw growth and the bite as permanent teeth come in
  • Helps your child feel at ease with the dentist for life

Treatments

Dental Treatments for Children

Most children need only check-ups and prevention. When a tooth does need treatment, these are the usual options.

  • Check-ups and cleaning

An examination of the teeth, gums and bite every six months, with gentle cleaning when it is needed.

  • Fluoride varnish

A quick coating painted onto the teeth to strengthen the enamel and lower the risk of cavities.

  • Pit and fissure sealants

A thin protective layer over the grooves of the back teeth, where most childhood decay begins.

  • Tooth-coloured fillings

Small cavities are cleaned and filled before the decay can reach the nerve of the tooth.

  • Pulp treatment for milk teeth

When decay reaches the nerve, a pulpotomy or pulpectomy removes the infection and keeps the tooth, often with a crown on top.

  • Space maintainers

If a milk tooth is lost early, a small appliance holds the gap open for the permanent tooth.

We also see children for dental injuries, for milk teeth that cannot be saved, and for early checks of the bite with our orthodontist. Only an examination can show which treatment, if any, your child needs.

Step by Step

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The first appointment is mostly about getting comfortable. This is the usual order.

  1. Settling in

Your child meets the dentist and sees the chair, the mirror and the light. Nothing is rushed, and you stay with them.

  2. A few questions for you

We ask about feeding, brushing, thumb-sucking or other habits, and any pain or changes you have noticed.

  3. A gentle examination

We count and check the teeth, gums and bite. Babies and toddlers can be examined sitting on your lap.

  4. Cleaning and fluoride, if needed

The teeth may be cleaned and given a fluoride coating. An X-ray is taken only when there is a clear reason for one.

  5. A plan you can follow

We explain what we found, show you how to brush at your child’s age, and agree when to come back.

Care at Home

Looking After Your Child’s Teeth

What happens at home twice a day matters more than anything we do in the clinic.

Babies and toddlers

  • Wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth before the first tooth appears.
  • From the first tooth, brush twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.
  • Do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Book the first dental visit by the first birthday.

Age three and above

  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, and help with brushing until about age seven.
  • Keep sweets, biscuits and sweet drinks to mealtimes instead of through the day.
  • Offer water between meals.
  • Ask us about a mouthguard if your child plays contact sports.

Call us the same day if

  • Your child has a toothache that keeps them awake, or a swollen gum or face.
  • A permanent tooth is knocked out. Hold it by the top, keep it in milk and come straight in.
  • A fall has chipped, loosened or moved a tooth.

  • The treatment neededA check-up with fluoride is simpler than a filling, and a filling is simpler than pulp treatment.
  • How deep the decay isDecay found early needs a small filling. Decay that reaches the nerve needs pulp treatment and often a crown.
  • How many teeth are involvedSeveral cavities usually mean more than one visit.
  • Crowns and appliancesCrowns and space maintainers are made to fit your child, so their type is part of the total.

Common Questions

Questions Parents Ask Us

When should my child first see a dentist?

By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. An early visit lets us check that the teeth are coming in normally and show you how to care for them before any problem starts.

Milk teeth fall out anyway. Why treat them?

The last milk teeth stay in the mouth until around age 10 to 12. Until then your child needs them to chew, to speak and to keep the space for the permanent teeth. An untreated cavity can cause pain and infection, and losing a milk tooth too early can lead to crowding later.

How do I choose a pediatric dentist in Gurugram?

Look for a clinic that lets you stay with your child, explains each step in simple words and puts prevention before treatment. Ask who will see your child, and think about the journey, because check-ups come round every six months. Soul Dentistry is at Galleria Market in DLF Phase 4, close to Sushant Lok and Golf Course Road.

My child is scared of the dentist. What can I do?

Bring them early, before there is any pain, so the first visit is an easy one. Talk about it in plain, positive words and avoid words such as injection or drill. In the clinic we go at your child’s pace and show each instrument before we use it.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Digital X-rays use a very low dose of radiation. We take one only when it will change the treatment, for example to see decay between two teeth or a tooth that has not come through.

When should my child be checked for braces?

A first orthodontic check at around age seven is useful, once the first permanent molars and front teeth have come in. Most children need no treatment at that age, but some problems with jaw growth are easier to correct early.

Is thumb-sucking a problem for my child’s teeth?

Most children stop by themselves between the ages of two and four. If the habit continues once the permanent front teeth begin to appear, at around age six, it can affect the bite, and we can suggest gentle ways to help your child stop.
