When to Come In

Signs You Are Due a Visit

You do not need to wait for pain. Cavities and gum disease often cause no symptoms until they are advanced.

  • Bleeding gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are an early sign of gum disease.

  • Bad breath that stays

Breath that does not improve with brushing can come from plaque below the gum.

  • Yellow or brown deposits

Hard tartar near the gum line that brushing cannot remove.

  • Sensitivity to sweet or cold

A twinge from a tooth can be the first sign of a cavity.

  • Receding gums

Teeth that look longer, or gaps appearing at the gum line.

  • Six months since your last visit

Even with no symptoms, a regular check catches problems early.

Routine Care

Teeth Cleaning

A professional clean reaches what your toothbrush cannot.

Even with good brushing, plaque hardens into tartar in places that are hard to reach. Once it has hardened, only a dentist can remove it. Left alone, it irritates the gums and leads to gum disease and bad breath.

In a routine cleaning, an ultrasonic scaler gently breaks up tartar above and just below the gum line, and the teeth are then polished to remove surface stains from tea, coffee, tobacco or paan.

  • Best for: everyone, as part of a regular six-monthly visit
  • Removes: plaque, tartar and surface stains
  • Comfort: usually painless, with no numbing needed
  • Result: fresher breath, smoother teeth and healthier gums

Check-Up

Cavity Inspection

A small cavity needs a small filling. A missed one can need a root canal.

Early decay often causes no pain, and cavities between teeth cannot be seen in a mirror. During an inspection the dentist checks every tooth, the gums, your bite and the soft tissues of the mouth.

Where needed, a digital X-ray shows decay between teeth and under old fillings. In-house OPG imaging gives a full view of the jaws in a single scan. You get a clear explanation of anything found, and nothing is done without your agreement.

  • Checks: teeth, old fillings, gums, bite and soft tissues
  • X-rays: only when they are needed to see hidden decay
  • Early treatment: small cavities are filled before they reach the nerve
  • A clear plan: findings and costs explained before any treatment

Gum Treatment

Dental Scaling

Deep scaling treats gum disease by cleaning below the gum line, where the infection sits.

When tartar builds up under the gums, they pull away from the teeth and form pockets that trap bacteria. This is gum disease. Over time it destroys the bone that holds teeth in place, and it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Deep scaling, sometimes called scaling and root planing, removes tartar from inside these pockets and smooths the root surfaces so the gums can reattach. It may be done in sections over more than one visit, and the gums can be numbed for comfort.

  • Best for: bleeding, swollen or receding gums and deep gum pockets
  • Visits: one or more, depending on how many areas need treatment
  • Comfort: local anaesthetic or numbing gel where needed
  • Result: healthier gums and a better chance of keeping your teeth

Step by Step

What Happens at Your Visit

A typical check-up and cleaning follows this order.

  1. Your concerns

We start by asking about any pain, sensitivity or worries, and about your health and medicines.

  2. Examination

The dentist checks each tooth for decay and measures the gum pockets around your teeth to check for gum disease.

  3. X-rays if needed

A digital X-ray is taken only when it is needed to see between teeth or below the gum.

  4. Scaling and polishing

Tartar is removed with an ultrasonic scaler, then the teeth are polished smooth and clean.

  5. Advice and plan

We show you what we found, give tips for cleaning at home, and explain any treatment you may need.

Aftercare

After Your Cleaning

What you do at home between visits decides how long your teeth stay clean.

  • Teeth feel smoother and cleaner straight away.
  • Mild sensitivity to cold for a day or two.
  • Slight gum bleeding or tenderness after deep scaling, which settles.

Keeping teeth clean

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or a small brush.
  • Cut down on sugary snacks and drinks between meals.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste if your teeth feel tender.

Call us if

  • Gum bleeding continues for more than a few days.
  • You notice swelling or a bad taste around a tooth.
  • Sensitivity gets worse instead of settling.

Common Questions

Questions About Cleaning and Check-Ups

Does scaling damage the enamel?

No. Scaling removes tartar sitting on the tooth, not the enamel itself. Done properly, it is safe to repeat at every routine visit.

My teeth felt loose after scaling. Is that normal?

Heavy tartar can hold teeth together and fill gaps. Once it is removed, gaps that gum disease had already caused become visible. The scaling did not cause them, and treating the gums helps keep those teeth.

Does a cleaning hurt?

A routine cleaning is usually painless, though you may feel vibration and some sensitivity. For deep scaling, the gums can be numbed so you stay comfortable.

How often should I come in?

Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease, smoke or have diabetes, your dentist may suggest every three or four months.

Will a cleaning whiten my teeth?

It removes surface stains, so teeth often look brighter. It does not change the natural shade of your teeth; for that, ask about teeth whitening.

Do you see children?

Yes. Children’s check-ups focus on prevention, with gentle cleaning and advice for parents.
