Root Canal Treatment in Gurugram

A root canal removes the infection inside a tooth and seals it, so the pain stops and your natural tooth stays. At Soul Dentistry it is carried out by an endodontist, a specialist in this treatment.

The Treatment

What a Root Canal Does

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes infected and the tooth starts to hurt.

In a root canal treatment the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the roots, then fills and seals them. The tooth is then rebuilt, often with a crown, so it can be used for chewing again.

  • Relieves toothache and sensitivity
  • Saves your natural tooth, with no extraction
  • Stops infection spreading to nearby teeth and gums
  • Restores normal chewing and biting

When to Come In

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Any one of these is worth an examination. The earlier a tooth is treated, the simpler the treatment.

  • Toothache that stays

Pain that lingers, throbs, or gets worse when you bite or lie down.

  • Lingering sensitivity

Hot or cold that keeps hurting after the food or drink is gone.

  • Swelling near a tooth

A swollen or tender gum, or a small pimple-like bump on it.

  • A darkened tooth

One tooth turning grey or darker than those beside it.

  • A deep cavity or crack

Damage deep enough to reach the inside of the tooth.

  • Pain that suddenly stops

The nerve may have died while the infection is still there.

These signs can have other causes too. Only an examination and an X-ray can show whether a root canal is the right treatment.

Step by Step

How the Treatment Works

Knowing what happens in the chair makes the visit easier. This is the usual order.

  1. Examination and scan

We examine the tooth and take a digital X-ray or scan in the clinic to see the roots and how far the infection has gone.

  2. Numbing the tooth

Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and the area around it. Treatment begins only once you are comfortable.

  3. Cleaning the canals

Through a small opening in the tooth, the infected pulp is removed. The canals are measured, then cleaned and shaped with rotary instruments.

  4. Filling and sealing

The clean canals are disinfected, filled and sealed so that bacteria cannot get back in.

  5. Rebuilding the tooth

The tooth is closed with a filling. A crown is often advised, especially for back teeth, to protect it for the long term.

Looking after the tooth

  • Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final filling or crown is fitted.
  • Brush and floss as usual, and take any medicine as your dentist advises.
  • Come back for your crown appointment if one is planned.

Common Questions

Questions About Root Canal Treatment

Is a root canal painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so most people feel pressure and movement but not pain during treatment. Some soreness afterwards is normal and usually settles in a day or two.

How many visits will I need?

Many root canals are completed in one or two visits. It depends on the tooth and the infection, and your dentist will tell you after the examination.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Often, yes. A treated tooth can become more brittle, and back teeth take most of the chewing force, so a crown is usually advised to protect it.

How long does a treated tooth last?

With a good filling or crown and normal brushing, flossing and check-ups, a root-treated tooth can last for many years.

What happens if I leave it untreated?

The infection does not clear up by itself. It can spread, cause swelling and damage the bone around the tooth. The main alternative to a root canal is removing the tooth and replacing it.
